The Weekly Top 3 (9.24.2018)

Welcome to The Weekly Top 3 — our look at the top 3 things on our mind this week — for the week of September 24, 2018.

The Weekly Top 3 is a regular segment on The Michael Dukes Show. I join Michael on the Show each Tuesday from, now 6:20-7am for a discussion between the two of us about the three issues. The Show broadcasts on FacebookLive and via streaming audio from the Show’s website weekdays from 6-8am.

This week our Top 3 issues are these: (1) we agree with an Anchorage Daily News editorial that argues Alaska’s “toughest budget choices are yet to come” (at 2:37), (2) we take a look at what’s happening with oil prices; are they sustainable and what do they mean for the #AKbudget (at 21:45), and (3) why, as a state and nation, we REALLY need to be paying attention to what’s going on with Social Security (at 29:35).

The segment is at the YouTube clip above. For those that prefer the audio version, it is available on our Soundcloud page here. For this and other complete podcasts of The Michael Dukes Show, go to the Show’s Soundcloud page here.

The Weekly Top 3 (9.17.2018)

Welcome to The Weekly Top 3 — our look at the top 3 things on our mind this week — for the week of September 17, 2018.

This week our Top 3 issues are these:

* First, as the candidates start settling into their campaign fiscal positions we examine what they are (at 2:26),

* Second, we look at the question of how much did the #AKleg really approve in spending last session and what does FY 2020 look like (13:00), and

* Third, we examine AGDC’s recent agreement with Exxon; how far does it push the project forward (23:45).

At the end (31:00) we also include discussions we had with Michael during the breaks about what’s driving Mike Dunleavy’s evolving fiscal plan and about Peter Micciche’s recent, election-year conversion to “PFD Defender.”

The Weekly Top 3 (9.10.2018)

Welcome to The Weekly Top 3 — our look at the top 3 things on our mind this week — for the week of September 10, 2018.

This week’s show is a deep dive into both federal and state fiscal issues. Maya MacGuineas of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget joins Michael in the first segment (at 2:09) to talk about federal fiscal issues. Then we join in the second (at 33:22) to focus on state issues. Because there is a significant connection between the two we include both segments in this podcast.

Our segment focuses on these three issues:

* First, following on from Maya’s discussion, why we believe Alaska’s fiscal situation in many respects is, unfortunately, a mirror image of the situation at the federal level (at 33:22);

* Second, now that oil prices and production levels are recovering, why we believe refilling the Constitutional Budget Reserve (CBR) should become a priority (at 52:45); and

* Third, what its going to take from a budget standpoint to preserve the PFD over the long term (at 1:12:35).

The segment is at the YouTube clip above. For those that prefer the audio version, it is available on our Soundcloud page here. For this and other complete podcasts of The Michael Dukes Show, go to the Show’s Soundcloud page here.
